Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

Although yesterday was Earth Day, it’s still being commemorated by people who celebrate Earth Month. In that spirit, there is something else you can do to help the planet while you reduce clutter in your home. While you're sorting and purging, you might come across expired medications.

I recently read a blog post that said you don’t have to dispose medication by its expiration date. Being the skeptic that I am, I followed the link that was posted to back up the claim. Although the source is legitimate, I have trouble believing the claim. If you have questions about how long you can safely keep medication before disposing it safely, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

To enable the safe disposal of unused or expired medication, The Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) created National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. The next scheduled event is this Saturday, April 28.   From 10 am to 2 pm you can take medicines to approved locations, which you can find on the DEA Web site

While the best way to dispose of any unused drug, over-the-counter or prescription, is to return it to your pharmacy for safe disposal, most people don’t have that option. The worst thing you can do is flush medicine, because it harms the environment.

Do you know of local or national groups that make it easier to dispose of medications safely?  Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us.

Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22.

The Earth Day Network has an interactive activity on their  Web site that allows you to “measure” your ecological footprint.  Your footprint is determined by the amount of natural resources you consume, given where and how you live.
To celebrate Earth Day, you don’t need to buy the T-shirt.  You can join the Environment in a Day projectby taking a picture of your environment on Sunday and uploading it to flicker.

When you live a less-cluttered life, you also contribute less damage to the environment.  Thinking about the amount of stuff you buy, eat and use, along with how far it travels, is a good start.
Can you commit to changing your habits this year?  Can you use less water or electricity?  What about driving less or buying fewer packaged foods?  Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us how you can help improve the environment.

National Library Week

Sponsored by the American Library Association , National Library Week recognizes libraries for all that they offer us and also honors librarians for the work they do.

You can show your admiration for your local librarian on Tuesday, which is National Library Workers.   For those of you who use twitter, you can follow the conversation about Library Week at #nlw12.

If you’re a fan of Brad Meltzer’s,you’ll be interested in this video, where he talks about what libraries mean to him.

The public library and school library were wondrous places for me when I was a child and I remain dedicated to my  local public library.  You can visit my Events page on facebook to see when I will be appearing at the library for a book reading/signing.  If you would like to see me at your library, let me know by leaving a comment, below.

Stop by your library and say "thanks" to your librarian this week.

World Autism Day

Today is the fifth annual World Autism Day. Created by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007, April 4th is the day you’ll find numerous organizations bringing attention to the causes of and treatments for autism.

President Barak Obama issued a proclamation today and encouraged Americans “to learn more about autism and what they can do to support individuals on the autism spectrum and their families.”

The latest news from the CDC is that 1 in 88 American third-grade children has autism spectrum disorder.

Here’s what you can do:
  • Write to your Congress member to ask for increased funding for autism research
  • If you have a young child, make sure to get him/her evaluated for developmental disabilities
  • Donate to Autism Speaks
  • If you know a family impacted by autism, offer your support
  • Today and all during the month of April, light it up blue
