Quote: Just Do Something

Don’t wait until you are able to set aside a huge block of time to complete a project. Any forward movement you make will create a feeling of achievement.

Progress equals happiness. Tony Robbins

If you work at your goal a little at a time, you’ll complete it eventually. If you don’t work at it all, you’ll never finish it.

Move forward! Make progress!

Quote: Will It, Do It

Some days it takes more energy to get things done. You might not be in the mood to tackle a task and you find yourself doing everything except the one thing you need to do.

Always bear in mind that your own resolution to succeed is more important than any other one thing. - Abraham Lincoln

How do you motivate yourself to finish a project or start one that you’ve been putting off?

I use a number of tricks, like giving myself permission to work for just a short time or reminding myself that I can do something instead of thinking that I have to do it.

Your will is stronger than you realize. When you set your mind to move forward, you'll be amazed what you can accomplish.

Quote: Start Small

While Martin Luther King, Jr. wasn’t referring to clearing clutter, this quote of his remains pertinent:

You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

You can become overwhelmed if you imagine tackling an entire task; but if you take one step at a time, you’ll be able to accomplish substantial achievements.

Reader Question: Why Can’t I Finish Things?

Recently, a reader mentioned that she feels frustrated because she can’t get anything accomplished. She’s always moving between tasks, instead of finishing one thing before starting another.

There are lots of reasons why people don’t finish what they start and I’ve written about some of them on this blog:

Because they’re afraid they won’t do the job perfectly.

Because it’s more fun to start a project than to see it through.

Because they think they don’t have enough time.

Because it feels overwhelming.

Or, if you have ADD, it could be because you are easily distracted. Even if you weren’t diagnosed as a child, you still could have ADD as an adult. Talk to your doctor if you exhibit signs of ADD. You don’t have to suffer when there are ways to treat it.

Of course, if a task has little to no payoff, you might be better off letting it go.

Do you tend to finish projects or do you leave things hanging while you start new tasks?

Quote: Procrastination

The first Wednesday in September is Fight Procrastination Day. This year, it’s September 3, which is next week.

I can procrastinate as well as anyone; however, I also know that when there are things to be done, I need to do them.
Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week. – Unknown

One of the techniques I use to keep myself focused on important tasks is to limit the number of items on my to-do list daily. Otherwise, I would be overwhelmed by all the things I wanted to accomplish.

Quote: Let Go of Perfection

I’m trying to buy a new (to me) car.

My current car is 15 years old. Aside from the fact that the car has been dependable, the thought of buying another car keeps me from replacing the old Corolla.

For me, shopping for a car ranks up there with getting my teeth drilled. It probably isn’t that  torturous, but I let it become a huge project.

Part of the problem right now is that I don’t have a particular car in mind. So I resort to my failsafe habit: I research and make lists.

I have a list of no-compromise options. I have a list of cars in my price range. I have a list of expert opinions on those cars. And the “Car Comparison” document is now seven pages long.

I congratulate myself for not creating a spreadsheet, which is one of my alternative behaviors when I have to make a complicated choice.

No matter what I choose, there will always be a less expensive car or one with better options or one with more cargo room or whatever. Being satisfied with the result of the search is the challenge. In other words, when do you stop looking?

Striving for perfection is the greatest stopper there is. It’s your excuse to yourself for not doing anything.  Instead, strive for excellence, doing your best. – Sir Laurence Olivier

At some point, you have to realize that more searching, more editing, more list making -  more delaying - is not serving you. You need to act.

Give your best effort to the things you do and let go of the striving for perfection. You’ll get more done and you’ll experience less stress.

Do you struggle with trying to do things perfectly? Can you create a limit for the amount of work you put into a task so that it just gets done?

The Organizer Comes Clean on Clutter

I cooked Friday and left the pots and cookie sheets in the sink. I was tired and I really didn’t want to do dishes. So they sat for two days. I continued to put dishes in the dishwasher, but I left the things that needed to be hand-washed in the sink.

There they were, each time I went into the kitchen. Washing a few dishes isn’t that difficult, but I had turned it into a life-sucking undertaking that I just couldn’t motivate myself to do.

Then I woke up Sunday morning, made coffee and thought that I’d really like to see the sink empty.

Instead of saying that I didn’t want to wash dishes, I focused on what I didwant. I wanted to see the clutter go away. And I washed the dishes, which probably took two minutes.

Sometimes changing your outlook on a task is all it takes to get it done. Instead of thinking about what you need to do, focus on what you want. Somehow, that simple attitude adjustment can make all the difference.

Are you putting off a chore that you can do easily? What is it that you want to see?
