More Reasons Not to Multitask

According to a recent poll, 53% of kids 12-17 years old are involved in other tasks while doing homework. Kids who watch TV, send IMs or email while doing homework may cause themselves harm, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Says Dr. Jordan Grafman, chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Section, when children interrupt completing longer-term goals with constant interruptions, they can slow down the development of critical brain processes. “No one can deliberate, acquire facts or truly learn if he’s flitting around doing a dozen things at once,” states Dr. Grafman. Good advice for adults, too.
