I often find old stocks and bonds when I work with clients. Many valuable old certificates are languishing in closets, basements and attics, because their owners have forgotten about them. If you find old stock certificates, you can see if they have any value by visiting www.stocksearchintl.com or www.rm-smythe.com.
Could you or a family member have a pension that you weren't aware of? The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation is holding $34 million in unclaimed pension benefits. Search www.pbgc.gov to see if you are a beneficiary.
The NY State Banking Dept is helping process claims for Holocaust survivors and their heirs. Visit www.claims.state.ny.us if you may be eligible for compensation.
Finally, check with your state’s unclaimed property office annually to see if you or a family member may be entitled to money you didn’t realize was out there.
