Holiday Shopping

The National Retail Federation reports that in 2007 40% of holiday shoppers had started their shopping before Halloween, but fewer than 11% were finished by December 15.

Some people prefer to shop online, to avoid crowds and the inevitable parking problems. Others like to see and feel things before they buy them. Whichever way you choose to buy gifts for friends and family, think about how much you want to spend on each person and keep to that limit. It can be tempting to buy "just one more thing" until the credit card bills start to roll in.

This year, challenge yourself to buy fewer gifts and make them more meaningful. Can you offer gifts of time with the people you love instead of buying them something they don't really need? How about treating someone to a play, concert or meal? If you live far apart and can't go together, what about buying tickets for an event?

What are some ways that you have been able to cut back on the gift giving frenzy?
