September is National Preparedness Month. Since 2003, the Ready campaign has issued public service advertising to educate Americans about preparing for emergencies, both man-made and natural disasters.
Throughout the month, the Department of Homeland Security, in coordination members of the private sector and local, state and federal government agencies, will highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and promote involvement through events and activities across the country. You can take simple steps at home and at work to increase your preparedness and your ability to respond in a crisis.
Make sure you have a communications plan, an evacuation plan and a meeting place for members of your family. Find out what your children’s schools have planned if there is an emergency and be sure that they have phone numbers where you can be reached.
Create a kit of emergency supplies that will allow you to survive for at least three days. Include food, water, sanitary supplies and products for pets, babies and anyone with special needs. Pack your supplies in a suitcase or tote bag that you can take with you if you have to leave your home quickly. Stash some cash in your kit, as well, in case you lose access to an ATM.If you already have an emergency kit, rotate in new supplies and use up what was in it.
