Design Your Dorm

I thought I had nothing more to say about dorm living, then I found out about http://www.designyourdorm.com/. There’s a lot to think about when you’re moving into your first dorm room. If you’ve never lived in a small space with another person, can you make it work? Will you get along? Will you have the same design sensibilities?

When you go to the Website, you can put in the name of your school and residence hall. The site says it has over 140 schools in its database. If your school isn’t one of them, you can still use the tool; you’ll just have to put in the dimensions of the room. You will be able to see a 3-D rendering of your space and you can decorate it virtually.

In addition, you can purchase products(the site is affiliated with Amazon.com) and have them shipped directly to your dorm , which is handy for students who are going to school far from home.

While the site ostensibly is about communication between roommates, there is a lot of emphasis on buying stuff. Think about what you really need, and what really fits, before you make any purchases.

Back to School Shopping

I used to love when the back to school catalogs and magazine articles came out. I would dream about the upcoming cooler weather and new clothes.

The ads now come earlier than I remember, somehow.

Maybe it’s because so many people go to college now and there is an entire industry built around outfitting them. While most of the things pitched at college students seem like a waste of money, there are a few things that actually could be useful.

Bed Bath & Beyond offers a Dorm Space Saver, reminiscent of the tower that goes over the toilet in the bathroom. This one goes at the head of the bed and has places for a drink, lamp, book and alarm clock, among other things. Since dorm rooms are small and don’t usually have beside tables, this piece is very functional.

If that is out of your price range or it’s not your style, they also sell a “Gearbox Sport” bedside caddy, which holds tissues, reading material, a drink and the requisite electronic devices.

As for all the other things the ads make you believe are essential, forget it. I mean, really, does anyone need a Snuggie?

Finish One Thing

I had company over 4th of July weekend and I wanted my home to look nice. I had several unfinished projects that I wanted to complete so that my cousin would enjoy her stay and I could feel like a host instead of a construction worker.

Of course, the best of intentions don’t always make things happen. I was fretting and flitting from project to project, which included finishing a wedding present for the weekend, too. I finally realized that I had set unrealistic timelines to get all the things done. My cousin would be happy to stay with me, even though the bathroom hadn’t been painted and I could go to the wedding without the gift in hand.

Once I made the commitment to just finish scraping the wallpaper in the guest bathroom, I could relax. I scheduled the work into my day and got it done on time. I worked on the gift when I needed a break, enjoying the process, instead of trying to finish it all in a frenzy of late-night sewing.

The curtains didn’t go up in the living room, among other tasks, but it didn’t matter. What’s important is spending time with people you care about, not whether you have finished all your outstanding projects. There will always be more to do, but time to enjoy family and friends is fleeting.

Can you pick just one thing to finish? Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us about it.
