Do You Have the Time?

It seems like everyone is stretched so thin these days, with work, family and social obligations. Sometimes it’s hard to find time for things you want to do, like exercising, reading or putting your stuff in order.

When people tell me that they don’t have time to do something, I disagree. You do have time, you’re just using it for something else. If you enjoy watching TV, can you exercise or work on a hobby at the same time? Can you listen to a ball game while you cook or clean up?

If you spend a lot of time looking for things, wouldn’t it make sense to block out 15 minutes each day to sort, trash and put things away? Even though it’s only a small amount of time daily, those 15-minute blocks contribute to a calmer life.

If you feel overwhelmed by paper, for instance, don’t focus on the huge piles that have built up; instead, start with this week’s mail. Once you sort, trash and put away what you need to keep, you can take a few of the papers off the top of a pile and act on them. It may take a few weeks before you get through your backlog, but you’re never going to find that afternoon you think you can set aside for organizing paper.

If you find yourself spending more time than you’d like on the computer or watching TV, commit to spending a certain time at it, then stop. You can set an alarm to remind you when your time is up.

You can change your habits and accomplish more in the same amount of time. What habit can you change to gain more time in your day?  Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us.
