Using Apps To Keep You on Track

Melissa Bell, a writer for the Washington Post, found herself getting distracted when using her computer.

In an article, “Digital tricks to tame an Internet addiction,” Ms. Bell cites computer programs that allow you to block out time so you aren't able to use email or any site where you find yourself spending too much time.

If you are avoiding work because you spend too much time on a shopping site or with your social network, one of the programs might help you fight procrastination.

Happy Presidents’ Day

You could celebrate our founding fathers by shopping today, but could you do something that would bring you closer to living more comfortably with what you already have instead?

Nothing Says Romance Like Letting Go of Clutter

It’s Valentine’s Day and lots of people are thinking about ways to surprise their sweethearts.

Forget candy and flowers this year. To really show your Valentine how much you care, do something different. Consider letting go of one thing that really bothers your significant other.

You might have been thinking about making the change before today; now you have another compelling reason – show someone you love that you are willing to let go of an object, habit or behavior that is causing bad feelings in your relationship.

You can present this promise as a gift, wrapped with a bow, or in a greeting card. Either way, put it in writing and let your beloved know that you are sincere.

Doing It All

Some days you are extremely productive and some days you are just busy. If you are moving your objectives forward, accomplishing what you need to, then you are having a productive day.

There are lots of ways to be busy, some of which are productive and some of which aren’t. Filling your day with unimportant tasks makes you busy, but doesn’t leave you time for things you need to do. Spending time searching for things can keep you busy, too, with the same result.

Some days you aren’t able to do what you need to because someone else is driving your agenda: your sick child, dissatisfied customers, insubordinate employees or visiting corporate executives. On those days, the best solution often is to reschedule what you can and use the short amounts of time you can salvage to get some priority work done.

Think about how you feel when you’ve had a tremendously productive day. A day like that makes you believe you can accomplish anything. Although you might be tired, you probably feel competent, satisfied, fulfilled.

Now think about a day when you were so busy you didn’t stop for lunch, yet you have no idea what you did all day. By 5:00 you’re left with the same list of things you started the day with. If this happens to you often, you may be over scheduling yourself or doing things you could be delegating. You might be doing things that don’t need to be done until a later date. Being energetic is good, but being frenzied is not.

Some people like to look busy because they think it makes them seem invaluable. If you’re not producing quality work, though, you’re just spinning around and someone is bound to notice eventually.

It’s important to find a balance between being idle and being stressed, with the outcome of achieving your goals. Being busy and being productive are not the same. What can you stop doing that will allow you to spend time on doing what you value? Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us.
