Reader question: Avoiding Holiday Chaos

This time of year can be chaotic for many people. The shopping, wrapping, baking, traveling and eating often take more time and energy than they realize.

Last week a reader asked how she can spend more time enjoying the holiday season and not worry about clutter building up.

If you want to avoid having to deal with clutter, it helps to maintain systems that you’ve created. If you don’t already have systems in place, starting now will allow you to enjoy time with family and friends.

This is not the time to start big projects like organizing the garage. Instead, focus on creating homes for things and work on putting them away after using them. Make decisions about each new item that comes into your home or workspace; don’t leave things out to take care of later. Put on your calendar tasks that you want to accomplish. Be realistic; let go of the idea of a “perfect” holiday.

For another perspective on simplifying during the holidays, take a look at this blog post from Rachel Meeks, where she describes how her family is doing less and enjoying more this year.
