The Motivation Myth

Why are some people successful at reaching their goals while others aren’t? Is it because they’re more highly motivated? Scientists have been studying what makes us do what we do and one of the things they have found is that successful people achieve their goals by developing productive habits.

Perhaps you haven’t accomplished what you want to because you think you don’t have enough time or enough money or enough talent. Chances are that those are roadblocks you put up to keep from succeeding. Instead of focusing on what you haven’t done, look at the habits you’ve cultivated and see if there is one you can change.

What do you do when the alarm goes off in the morning? If you perform a number of routine activities, you have established a morning habit. Can you change the routine so your mornings go more smoothly?

Think about the rest of your day. If your lunch routine consists of spending money on fast food, you could pack a nutritious lunch once a week. If you usually spend lunch at your desk, you could walk for 10 minutes before you eat. If you watch two hours of television each night, you could fold laundry or open mail or do some other tasks that don’t require you to think.

Don’t wait until you’re “in the mood” to do something. If you think you lack motivation, see what a change of habit does for you. Pay attention to your routine and make small changes until they become habits.

What small change can you make this week toward realizing your goal?
