Life List

Have you thought about creating a life list? Different from a “to-do” list, creating a life list helps you figure out the things that are most meaningful to you by writing down the things you want to accomplish in your life.

Simply writing things down isn’t going to make them happen; however, seeing your true heart’s desires on paper may prompt you to actually making them come true. View your list monthly and see what you can do to further your desires. If you are going to achieve your goals, you need to break them into steps and schedule them for completion. You can update your list annually, crossing off the things that no longer appeal to you and adding new ones.

You can get started by going to one of the websites where people post their life lists, like 43things.com, your100things.com or 2dobeforeIdie.com. You may be inspired by other people’s posts, which range from finishing high school to growing an organic garden. Not surprisingly, getting organized appears on many people’s lists.

Stop Slouching

I have noticed that when I spend large chunks of time in front of the computer, I experience neck and shoulder pain. Sharyn Pak, creator of the DVD Desk Sets: Five-Minute Desk Workouts, has a solution for reducing pain and improving posture. Sit on the edge of your chair, with your hands in your lap. Keeping your spine straight, lean back until your shoulders touch the back of your chair. Keep your neck muscles relaxed. Return upright, using only your abdominal muscles, not your shoulders. She recommends doing this exercise ten times, twice a day. If you can’t remember to do your exercises, set the timer on your computer to remind you that it’s time to move.

Earth Day Continues

You may already know that compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs are one of the easiest ways to reduce your impact on the planet. Using one CFL instead of an incandescent bulb will save about 260 pounds of carbon dioxide each year and save $25 to $45 in energy bills over the life of the bulb, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

While CFLs last an average of 3-5 years, they do eventually die. You may not know that each CFL contains about 5 milligrams of mercury and if they are thrown in the trash, they're likely to break, releasing the mercury into groundwater and soil.

To avoid contamination, CFLs can be recycled. Find a local resource for recycling CFLs by going to http://earth911.org/; type in CFL and your ZIP code.
