Meeting Your Goals

Last week I wrote about making changes without making resolutions, which most people don’t keep, anyway. This week I am introducing you to some technological tools that can help you stay accountable.

Joe's Goals (http://www.joesgoals.com) is a free online a tool that can help you keep track of your goals, therefore increasing your chance of success. It’s easy to use and you can monitor your daily score to measure how close you are getting to attaining your goals. You can even post your personal score to a blog or MySpace page, if you want to share your success with other people.

If your goal is to stop wasting time on the internet, there are free programs that let you determine how long you want to keep yourself from accessing the Web. SelfControl (http://visitsteve.com/work/selfcontrol) for Mac users and LeechBlock for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4476) allow you to “lock” yourself out of particular sites for a period of time so you can focus on your work.

Rachel Dry, of the Washington Post, wrote in Sunday’s paper about changing habits and referred to the two internet-blocking programs. She also quoted Wendy Wood, a professor at USC, who says that to change behavior, “you must change your environment, not just try harder in the same old situation.”

How can you change your environment to allow yourself to achieve your goals? Click on Post a Comment, below, and tell us.
