When You Don’t Have the Energy to Organize

At this time of year I hear people say they don’t have any energy left to tackle clutter. They’re just too busy shopping, cooking, traveling and doing whatever it is they need to do to get through the holiday season.

My suggestion is to treat this time of year just like the rest of the year: Take advantage of small bursts of energy and small pockets of time to get things done.

With everything else you have going on, don’t add the burden of more tasks to your to-do list. Instead, fit your organizing into your schedule.

When you’re on the phone, clear out a drawer and put back only the things you really use.

While you're watching TV, put away things that are out of place.

As you’re waiting for cookies to finish baking, go through a stack of paper and decide what you can let go of.

When you make use of these “lost” minutes, you don’t have to look for large chunks of time and tremendous amounts of energy to make your spaces more comfortable and more useful.
