Mattel recently recalled toys due to lead-paint contamination (http://www.mattel.com/safety/us/). Lead gets into children’s blood when they put toys with lead paint in their mouths. While the incidence of lead poisoning has decreased in the last 30 years due to the elimination of lead paint in houses and lead in gasoline, children are still vulnerable. Doctors recommend that children’s blood be tested for lead at regular pediatrician visits. If you notice that your child has been chewing on toys with lead paint or that paint is missing, you may wish to take your child for a blood test sooner. For more information, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/17/AR2007081702275.html.

Archiving Photos
If you use your digital camera a lot, you may be keeping track of your pictures on a photo-hosting site. There a number of websites that allow you to store and view your photos, download them and create albums. Be aware that Yahoo Photos is closing on September 20, so if you use the service you need to find a new host. Kodak, Shutterfly, Snapfish, Flickr, Fotki, Zoomr, and Photobucket all offer free subscriptions. To find out more about these websites and others, see http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/08/17/AR2007081700824.html.

You Did It!
You probably have been told to make a “To Do” list to stay focused and achieve your goals. While I agree that such lists are great organizing tools, I am going to ask you to think about a different kind of list.
You might be overwhelmed by everything you have to do, between family and work obligations, and feel like you don’t have time to do things for yourself. Instead of adding to your stress, create an “I Did” list. Make a list of three things you did today that make you feel good. Did you help someone out? Did you start a project that you have been dreading? Did you finish a task that you’ve been avoiding? Do this exercise every day and give yourself credit for what you have done. Once you realize how much you are able to do, you’ll feel better about knocking off some of those items on your “To Do” list.

Another Perspective on Stuff
I came across an essay, written recently by Paul Graham, who is a computer programmer, not a professional organizer. Paul has a very healthy perspective about “stuff;” among other things, he writes: “The only way you're ever going to extract any value from it is to use it. And if you don't have any immediate use for it, you probably never will.” Coming from someone who is not an organizer, the message is very powerful.
